Its objective is to assist business leaders in these trying times, whether they are learning the basics of business process improvement, planning their first business improvement project, or evangelizing process-oriented thinking throughout their organization.

So, let’s get started…

FAQ 7- What are the differences between ISO Vs CMMI and ISO Vs Six Sigma from a quality management systems standpoint?

Often, CMMI is compared to ISO 9001, and rightly so since they are similar in terms of improving quality systems. However, CMMI aims to create a system that allows business process improvement through measuring and defining the various stages that are ‘to be used’, whereas ISO 9001 quality levels are less specific and easier to obtain.

As regards ISO Vs Six Sigma, a comparison is impossible since they perform quite different functions. ISO 9000 family indicates ‘what and how’ an organization will manage the quality of its products and services; while Six Sigma focuses on reducing or eliminating errors, variations, and increasing customer satisfaction’.

frequently asked questions on continuous improvement FAQ 4- what are few limitations of CMMI methodology
Its objective is to assist business leaders in these trying times, whether they are learning the basics of business process improvement, planning their first business improvement project, or evangelizing process-oriented thinking throughout their organization.

So let’s get started…

FAQ 4- We understand Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is one of the most common business process improvement methodology within the IT industry. Are there any limitations of CMMI you could highlight?

CMMI or Capability Maturity Model Integration is indeed, one of the most popular business improvement methodology within the IT sector, also within the aerospace industry.

CMMI has many advantages when it comes to implementing the methodology to an organization, whether in the organization’s entirety or in departments. However, there are some limitations worth noting before incorporating this methodology.

CMMI is not exactly designed to suit every organization. There are times when using CMMI will not enhance existing performances, due to the strict documentation requirements that are necessary to implement this methodology. This is unachievable for many companies, especially of smaller size.

In addition, CMMI requires a detailed process that lists all the stages. It is better for bigger businesses to use CMMI than smaller ones since, smaller businesses often do not have the adequate resources or data to fulfill the requirements of CMMI methodology.

CMMI methodology demands a large amount of effort and time to put the changes into action. It also requires a significant shift in the mindset and philosophy of the organization, which can be quite stressful and overwhelming if the introduction of the ideas of CMMI is not successful.

Moreover, a business’s work culture can change drastically by implementing strict administration of CMMI. This can lower the feeling of independence and creativity amongst employees or developers.

Further, the models used in CMMI are not processes in their own right and do not offer the expected descriptions. Organizations have a right to choose the processes depending on the factors that are important to the business and it can be difficult for organizations to choose the best method. Despite being easy to understand, the various techniques used by CMMI can actually be difficult to implement.

Yet another reason CMMI can be limiting to a company is because, it draws the focus of the organization to reaching each level as a ‘goal’. Therefore, each minor goal is constantly being pursued and efforts get drawn away from the bigger picture i.e. business process improvement itself.

Moreover, using CMMI does not mean that success will definitely be achieved, since each organization needs to adapt the various stages in order to fulfill their own unique needs.

This multi-part blog article presents practical answers to frequently asked questions on improving business entities.
frequently asked questions on continuous improvement FAQ 3- continuous improvement for e-business
Its objective is to assist business leaders in these trying times, whether they are learning the basics of continuous improvement, planning their first business improvement project, or evangelizing process-oriented thinking throughout their organization.

So, let’s get started …

FAQ 3- Could you please throw some light on continuous improvement for e-business?

It is no secret that the internet plays a vital role in many businesses. Business interactions become quicker, easier through the internet and allow handling of business relationships/ transactions in many ways.

E-business describes the combination of an organization’s informative and communicative tools, technologies, otherwise known as “business software”. It allows for the improvement of processes by creating more value to the organization, clients and associates.

E-business process improvement is not only applicable to companies that exists virtually, but it can be applied to all types of businesses that use IT or work with digital products. The desired result of e-business process improvement is to complete processes in a quicker manner, while spending less funds and adding value to the company.

E-business process improvement is a vital part of e-continuous improvement program.

E- business process improvement enhances the workflow in a company effectively and efficiently. Also, it allows large and fast changes to take place which are essential for e-businesses, since they are always changing and expanding. Organizations must integrate their e-business processes with best-in-class process improvement methodologies in order to reach their goals.

The outcome of adopting e-business process improvement program in an organization is to generate value. Often, creating value brings forth an increase in employee motivation, customer satisfaction, a rise in profit margins and favored affiliations with associates.

E-business process improvement campaigns also aim to lower the mistakes caused by individuals because of misunderstandings or miscommunications, while motivating employees.

It is a common belief that executing e-business process improvement requires high-level technology. While high-level technology can help, it is definitely not the only way that implementation can and will take place.

E-business process improvement requires both the IT and managerial departments to work together in order to come up with decisive ways in which, e-business processes of the organization are made to work more efficiently and effectively.

Some of the proven e-business process improvement methodologies are Lean, CMMI, Hoshin, Scrum, Agile, Kanban etc.

Be it a brick and mortar workplace or an e-business, both need to stay in business to sustain and grow. The problems faced by brick & mortar and e- businesses are not same, but there are quite a few ‘similar’ problems. Therefore, e- continuous improvement methodologies must be appropriately selected, enforced, monitored and continued for business efficiency, sustained growth and consistent increasing profits.

3 Primary advantages of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)

1/31/2014

Capability Maturity Model Integration, otherwise known as CMMI, is a methodology used to provide a systematic approach to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization. A maturity model is a set of structured levels that describe how well the behaviors, practices and processes of an  organization can reliably and sustainably produce required outcomes.  It is beneficial to an organization since it provides a commonly used, tried-and-test and incorporated method of improvement.

The main reason for implementing CMMI methodology is to improve the overall performance of an organization, department or project. A maturity model can be used as a benchmark for comparison and as an aid to  understanding - for example, for comparative assessment of different organizations where there is something in common that can be used as a basis for comparison. CMMI therefore, can be used for assessing product/ service development, services management and product/ service acquisition.

When performance is improved, costs are lowered and delivery times are minimized. Customer satisfaction, quality and production are all improved as well. CMMI allows for costs to be reduced since it makes it possible to pinpoint where problems may be occurring and how the process can be enhanced in order to detect defects or potential problems early on. This also allows for costs of re-calls or re-work to be prevented. It makes the schedule more consistent and makes it easier to predict costs involved.

Delivery is an important aspect of all products and services. CMMI allows organizations to increase their consistency and allows for more predictable delivery times to be met. It is a huge advantage when organizations are considering implanting CMMI.

Organizations that use CMMI have the upper hand on competitors as well since it makes them stand out from their opponents. Its ability to improve performances significantly has made more companies aware of their need to implement this methodology. Organizations that have already chosen to incorporate CMMI into their companies have found that many competitors are finally learning that they need to adopt this methodology in order to grow as well.

An example of how highly regarded CMMI has become is that it is now a requirement that subcontractors working with the federal government, by coming up with solutions such as software, obtain CMMI or have a client cover it for them. It is required that those that deliver to the government must have CMMI involved in at least one stage of the entire process.

CMMI aims to increase performances of an organization whilst adhering to the original standards and procedures that are used, without changing them entirely. It aids organizations in enhancing their ability to deliver services or products in a consistent and predictable manner.

CMMI projects also share the structure of procedures, which guarantees that the optimal practices for an organization and distributed and implemented in such as way that is beneficial to the entire company. CMMI can be adjusted to provide a method for process improvement to a variety of settings in an organization and makes it possible for a business to reach its goals.

How to improve business processes using effective tools: Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) methodology

1/25/2014

Capability Maturity Model Integration or CMMI, is a methodology that helps businesses cover the most important aspects in an effective and efficient process. It is adaptable to all types of organizations. CMMI can be used for the organization as a whole as well as departments or projects.

It details a structure for enhancing processes, gives an approach that makes it possible to merge ideas of improvement for a process, adds methods of improvement to pre-existing procedures that are already in place in an organization and provides a way to integrate the improvements from an introductory level.

CMMI is a preferred choice for improving processes because it can be used for all types of circumstances that are aiming for improvement. Because the improvements can be made in increments or as a whole, this tool helps to advance the entire organization and allows for a continuous cycle to self sustain itself. There are two basic types of CMMI, continuous and staged, both of which are created to bring about the same results.

Continuous CMMI allows organizations to choose the various improvements that they believe are the most beneficial to the goals of the company, whilst lowering the possibilities of risks as much as possible. This is a preferred method when organizations are looking to make comparisons between other projects or who are looking for a way to introduce other standards of quality to the organization.

Staged CMMI is the most commonly used method of CMMI and involves five stages: goal, commitment, ability, measurement and verification. The developers of CMMI have come up with a system of analyzing and evaluating the ways in which an organization can optimally reach the various goals in each stage. Staged CMMI makes it possible to compare processes of different organizations and provides a structured system that can be used to improve the organization.

Each CMMI model comes with both advantages and disadvantages, which CMMI are open to sharing. SCAMPI (The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement) lists the various advantages and disadvantages of the different models that they provide. SCAMPI was created in order to aid businesses in enhancing their processes through focus on advancement and putting priorities that are best suited for the organizations goals.

CMMI is often compared to ISO 9001 and rightly so since they are similar in terms of improving systems. However CMMI aims to create a system that allows continuous improvement through measuring and defining the various stages that are to be used, whereas ISO 9001 quality levels are less specific and easier to obtain.
