Wish to improve Productivity? Come meet one of the most important Productivity tool - Value Stream Mapping

1/21/2014

Value steam analysis is a tool used to record, evaluate and enhance information flow that is necessary in order to produce a service or product. It is a technique that solely uses pen and paper in order to gain insight and understanding of the movement of information or materials through the value stream that contributes to the production of a service or product. It is a tool that is most frequently used in Lean approaches, which is slightly different from the process mapping tool that is commonly used in Six Sigma.

Value stream analysis differs from process mapping since it collects and shows a much larger range of information, involves more processes, used in wider circumstances and is used to find out where the focus of future events should be placed. Also referred to as an “end-to-end” map, value stream analysis does not only use the information regarding various activities leading up to a product or service, but also incorporates other elements of the entire process such as information and management methods.

It is an excellent tool for lowering time within a sequence since it allows us to find out valuable information regarding the process of making decisions as well as the actual process itself.

The two main stages of constructing a value stream analysis is to map out the various stages in the process itself and conclude that information by placing a map above with the flow of information that is involved in the process.

All the activities involved in the creation of a service or product are listed in a value stream analysis. This makes it easier to view the difference between meaning and necessary activities against those that are a waste of time or are prone to error. A good example of a value stream analysis makes it easy to separate the time by dividing activities that are deemed valuable and non-valuable. The analysis will make it clear as to which processes can be improved and can also be used to solve a specific problem, such as to find out where further efforts can be made to enhance production.

It is meant to be used a tool for continuous improvement. Instead of jumping into value stream analysis in one go, it is wiser to start implementing it in segments instead. This can also help to reduce the initial costs that it can take to start implementing the changes involved in a value stream analysis.

4 Key Features of Manufacturing Process Qualification.

1/9/2014

Manufacturing process qualification is necessary to guarantee that a particular process is working in a consistent manner in order to create a product according to its requirements and complying to its specifications. It is a vital stage in ensuring the processes, such as designing and manufacturing, are functioning correctly. When the processes are guaranteed this helps to lower cost, tools and time.

The essential reasons for performing manufacturing process qualification are to lower costs related to manufacturing and to adhere to requirements. When products that do not meet the requirements are ridden of before production, it helps to significantly lower operation cost and time. It is often necessary to meet requirements in order to qualify for a number of regulations, such as those implemented by the FDA or product specifications promised to consumers.

The best manufacturing process qualifications are achievable by having a well-rounded understanding of the various processes involved in manufacturing and the requirements of the product or service. A good tool to help one understand how to do so is to use process mapping. It is easier to understand all the various elements of a process by using this tool and encourages new ideas such as testing and further innovation studies.

As mentioned before, it is vital for manufacturing process qualifications to clearly understand the requirements that are related to the product. It is common for different industries to have different sets of standards and it is essential to follow these standards specifically.

There are four key features to developing a document that specifies the standards of manufacturing process qualifications, which include: design, installation, operational and performance qualifications. Each of these features needs to have a pre-consented procedure as well as data to back up the results.

There are many other reasons that manufacturing process qualification is an important procedure. It is not practical to begin the use of equipment or tools without knowing whether or not they can produce the required product. Often times, tools and equipment are expensive, high-tech and may even require a specific person to operate/control it; all these factors involve various costs that could otherwise be put to better use.

In order for an organization to reach success, it is necessary to spend time and money wisely. Therefore, understanding whether or not resources are effective and efficient, is vital. There are too many costs associated with unhappy customers, defected products, recalls and so on, all clubbed under a broad heading called ‘Cost of poor quality”.

Manufacturing process qualification is required to ensure product quality, lower overall costs, adhere to regulations, improve productivity & consumer satisfaction all resulting in accelerated business development and growth.

Continuous Business Improvement with mastermind Shruti Bhat series- Limitations of Lean Kaizen.

12/7/2013

The method of Lean Kaizen involves making small changes within an organization and implementing these changes on a continuous basis. These improvements allows for organization’s to reduce waste and improve productivity. It is used throughout the world and continues to work well for companies of all types (manufacturing or service based), sizes and segments. However, it is good to be aware of the limitations of Lean Kaizen before implementing this method to an organization.

A large drawback of Lean Kaizen is that it can require organizations to change their methods and procedures, whether it comes to style, communication and more. It can be hard for companies that are used to the way things are in order to make the necessary improvements. Companies need to be open to communication and allow all employees to speak up on issues. This method will not work well or at all in many instances, if the communication channel is not open within an organization.

Whilst implementing Lean Kaizen typically has a positive effect for employees, by improving morale and validation, it also can be viewed as a negative change. Some employees may feel that the change is a stage in eliminating their position or will feel threatened by the requirement of changing their workspace or procedures.

It is necessary for all employees to be  well informed and aware of the reasons for using Lean Kaizen. Otherwise, the drive that motivated workers during the initial stages can dwindle down over time. This is especially harmful if the solutions have not yet been put to action. The organization will not receive the desired results and can deter employees from wanting to continuously use this strategy.

Implementing Lean Kaizen can be quite stressful since it becomes a new focal point within the organization. It can cause the work area to become more detached and objective since employees may feel continuous pressure to exceed their prior performances. If stress levels in workers become too high then it can have a negative effect on how efficient and productive the work force is.

Another limitation that is noted in Lean Kaizen is that this method focuses largely on reducing waste, which can withdraw focus from other important aspects. The idea behind Lean Kaizen is that getting rid of waste will increase efficiency and productivity but, whilst the process is being implemented, it can cause lack of focus of the wellbeing of employees, responsibilities in the corporation and others. It is necessary for effective management to monitor and assess the methods that are being potentially used when implementing Lean Kaizen. Alternatively stated, change management procedures have to be extremely efficient in order to make Lean Kaizen methodology a success.

Continuous Business Improvement with mastermind Shruti Bhat series- Advantages of Lean Kaizen.

12/6/2013

Kaizen is a method of continual improvement that is often implemented by organizations in order to increase efficiency and reduce, or eliminate, waste. It is a method that involves all workers of the company and allows for everyone to have a say regarding possibilities of improvement, as well as pinpointing methods that are not efficient or could be better. Unlike workshops that take place annually or monthly, Kaizen is continuously implemented.

The ideas that are addressed in Lean Kaizen are often small since this method works effectively when small changes are made. These small changes tend to improve important aspects of the company such  as efficiency, safety and productiveness. Aside from working on aspects that are deemed problematic within a process, Lean Kaizen also encourages workers to speak up regarding all aspects of improvement.

Perhaps the best advantage of Lean Kaizen is that it greatly reduces waste. This can include aspects such as  transportation, supply chain logistics, skills, inventory, processes and  production. It also lowers costs, increases safety, allows for more efficient delivery and improves the customer satisfaction.

Another advantage from implementing Lean Kaizen is that it allows for much more space, due to the elimination of unnecessary items. It also increases quality of the product, uses capital in a better manner, improves communication and allows employees to feel valued in the company. Since employees are a significant part of the process, they feel that they are contributing to the organization’s cause in a big way and this tends  to augment loyalty and dedication.

Employees that are continuously assessing  their environment in order to find methods of improvement have a higher chance of addressing necessary changes within the workspace. Since employees that are  involved tend to have higher morale, they work more effectively and experience more enjoyment.

Since Lean Kaizen focuses on making small changes, the results are immediate. When an organization chooses to undergo large changes it takes much more time to see results and have a number of negative drawbacks. However, the advantage of using Lean Kaizen is that it can work on a larger number of smaller problems, which brings about desired results.

It is still necessary for companies to undergo large changes for certain projects however Lean Kaizen has a positive effect on the entire process by making it easier to implement in increments and to analyze detailed aspects as well as the bigger picture. The reason Lean Kaizen is widely used and favored is because it is a continuous method that is continually making little improvements that greatly improve the processes of an organization and lowers waste.
