Digital marketing- Are we fully exploring the full potential of social media for marketing our products?

With the advent of social media, the means of communication between people changed, more so at the personal front. Didn’t we find our long lost friend or a relative via Facebook? And didn’t it feel great to be re-connected- Sure it did.

But now social media has out grown, not only in its usage but also its applicability and importance in our life. Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Google plus and a large number of similar such social media platforms have humongous fan following across the globe. Today social media means serious business- a channel for communication, networking and marketing.

Social media provides companies with an opportunity to generate value by building powerful, lasting relationships with consumers through digital communities, engage users, analyze consumer behavior and measure spending trends. Companies with their steps in tune with future have long realized this and have already invested huge resources into this social media rave.

How can companies ensure that these investments don’t go waste? By designing effective social media strategies that are distinctive, proficient and customized to each product. A “One- size –fits- all” policy shall not work with social media marketing, one needs to have a significant amount of marketing creativity and strategy skill.

A recent example of this being Burberry Fashion show.

Burberry reimagined its fashion shows—once elite, exclusive and effectively off-limits to the brand’s many admirers. The company started live streaming the shows directly to millions of fans on Facebook. Burberry also created the “Tweetwalk,” an innovative, real-time social media experience in which every fashion show element was tweeted before the models hit the runway. Burberry isn’t using social media as a channel—it’s using it to fully digitize its brand, transform its organization, and unlock market-leading performance.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, You shall get what you’ve always got” - a very old adage, but so true even now. If we are thinking of exponential growth in our businesses, we simply can’t afford to sideline social media. Are you ready with your digitization / social media strategies?
